So guys!

Who is using the Match settings for HDR and SDR and Frame Rates or have you gone back to the default setting and left everything running at 60fps in HDR / Dolby Vision?

Here's a guy who loves leaving everything in HDR and loves how the colours 'pop'.

Just like bass and treble settings for music, I say whatever floats your boat and gives you enjoyment. And if its adding a new lease of life to your old film well that's great isn't it. Not as the director intended? Come on, get real, 1988 we were watching this film on a 21" CRT TV from VHS video with mono super hissy sound :') :')

I leave it on match for both settings

HDR applied to movies that aren't coded that way look awful...skin tones look awful and everyone is wearing lipstick - no thanks.

If it works for you, cool. I'll leave the setting as intended for each case

Love the lipstick part! I never thought of it like that but yes!!! Oh well, I guess since Apple has so many lawsuits right now, it's nice that Apple TV adds glitter to everything :)

Also 4K SDR/60 HZ and I leave match content enabled for just dynamic range. Frame rate matching was giving me audio sync issues w/ a Denon x1300 and 2017 OLED. However, it's been a while since i've tested and pretty much every component has received some type of firmware update.

I'd love to use the ATV 4K always in 4K HDR, but the GUI gets too washed and some videos become horrible, the compression noise gets much more evident. But for others it feels like they improve. So I switched to 4K SDR with Range Matching and lately I decided to use Frequency Matching as well, since I am not testing like crazy every two seconds (I hated the delay when the TV switches frequency). I would have never bought it if it was always in HDR, though.

Actually at this point I'd love the option to switch resolution as well. Many TVs upscalers are supposed to be better than the one of the ATV 4K. At least the ones of Bravia TVs are usually praised for that.

Yeah probably worth trying again as I have Apple TV going through Marantz AVR and into Panasonic CX802 TV. No sync issues for me at all! The slight delay in switching sometimes is annoying but I’d rather have content playing in its original format.

I'm sure that I will be the odd man out but I'm using 4K HDR @ 24 with both settings on.

I mostly do this because I almost exclusively use Plex and the Plex client won't switch frame rates on anything in an MVK container. My entire library is ripped at 24 which is what almost all movies are actually in as well.

The UI lags, but the percentage of time that I spend in the UI versus watching a movie is tiny and when a scene pans smoothly I don't even notice it as opposed to the judder I see at 60.

I still don't understand the fixation on 60Hz for material that is natively 24Hz, but it seems that a lot of people have it.

I have in 4K SDR 60, with marching on for both dynamic range and frame rate. I haven't experienced any issues. The switch to black screen is a tad jarring, but I got used to it. Either way, the first second of a movie/show is usually just the Netflix/HBO/Studio logo.

Can somebody please explain to me why you wouldn't set it at 4k HDR with match? Wouldn't it then step down to SDR with SDR content?

I've been trying to understand all this as well. I just switched from 4k hdr to 4k sdr w/ automatic switching since it seems the apps with hdr content support automatic switching while apps with sdr content don't always? When I had it on 4k hdr... apps like espn and directvnow looked awful and I would have to manually change it, they didn't automatically change on their own. As long as I'm still getting hdr when watching netflix and amazon, I'm happy.

On most LED TVs, HDR turns the backlight brightness to the maximum and thus the TV consumes the most power in HDR mode. This is fine to me when watching HDR content because that is why I bought an HDR-capable tv, but there is no reason for my TV to be burning 300W while displaying something trivial like a menu or a screensaver.

Also, a very common way TVs eventually stop working is their power supplies burn out (and not worth replacing, most people get a new tv at this point). I'm not entirely sure, but I can't imagine that continuously drawing the maximum amount of power that the power supply was designed to handle is good for it's longevity. So again, no reason to have the the power supply running at 100% while displaying something trivial like a menu or a screensaver.

ABSOLUTELY! You've hit the nail on the head AND SO UNLIKE APPLE to release something that makes a product use TWICE the energy. I believe that my Panasonic TV goes from 80 watts to 160 with HDR on. Being an eco warrior, I'm not happy to play along with that!
Also, since TV manufacturers are constantly telling us that 'there is no profit' on TVs is does makes me question the components that are fitted into these TVs. I'm thinking the majority especially from Samsung TV will not have a real longevity. Now put double the drain on it and 2 YEARS on from constant HDR, you may see these TVs failing!!!

Apple should force developers do include the API for frame rate matching in their apps. I'm based in Europe and about halve my apps use 50fps while the other half uses 60fps. With few exceptions, most of them don't change the frame rate automatically and I have to do it manually. Its getting really annoying. Even a high profile app like youtube doesn't have it. Strangely enough, youtube used to do it but they removed with an update...

In all fairness, it's about time Europe & the UK went the 60fps route. In an Internet one world, it's totally crazy going the 50fps route. With HDMI 2.1 happily going 120fps we'll be seeing this next year no doubt on the new TVs and i'm sure that we'll see Apple TV UI going at 120fps both 24 and 60fps along with 30fps fit nicely into the 120fps TVs :) Now don't even get me started on the old crazy 25fps for film over in the UK!!!!!!!!

You can get round the YOuTube delemma I guess by downloading the video and keeping it in your iTunes library and then either AirPlay or Home Share. Not that i've noticed any real problem with YT as my ATV reverts to 60fps when it doesn't auto detect the frame rate. I'm in the UK but I leave my TV on the 60/120hz setting. I don't watch UK TV ever so not a problem for me - SKY TV is soooooooo 1990 :) :) :) :) :)

I find the screen to be rather harsh when everything is set to HDR. I have a very dark room and I find the dark theme with 4k/60 SDR to be more pleasing.

I notice TVs have HDR+ settings these days. Would one only use these settings for say, Netflix HDR content? Watching say directv now app on Apple TV would benefit with HDR+ settings?

I think hdr+ is something Samsung is pushing over Dolby Vision.

I don't know of any movies that use hdr+.

I think it is to be used for SD content and disabled for hdr content.

HDR+ isn't a standard, it's a marketing term. It's just additional post processing on the TV taking advantage of the HDR input to increase contrast basically.
