I guess it is ok it is there now, but I haven't even used the multitasking yet. When iOS4 hits the iPad, then I will probably use for alarm clock and some other stuff.

For alarm clock? Surely it's just set and forget? Or are you using a third party alarm?

iPad doesn't have a native clock app like the iPhone, so you have to use a third party app. Without multitasking it is easy to forget to run that app last before going to sleep.

can't you just create some "get up!" event in the calendar app?

How exactly can you avoid using it? Everyone who has ever looked something up while they're on a phone call, or used the iPod functionality of their phone has been using it since the original iPhone. Mail and Safari have always taken advantage of it, too.

The only things that are new in iOS 4 are support for App Store apps that multitask, and the "tray" of applications ordered by most recent use instead of being in fixed positions on the home screen.

The fast app switching and remembering the place I was in the app alone is very useful. They do need to implement better memory management though.

Do I just not use apps that utilize this functionality? Because I see no difference in this regard between 4.0 and 3.X. (Other than the tray for 'fast switcing') What apps do you guys use where you benefit from multitasking?

I've actually heard people comment that they couldn't believe the iPhone 'didn't have multitasking before.' Of course it has for a long time, just not for all apps. I've heard from people who said they didn't think you could listen to music and do other things on an iPhone before now.

The main thing I use multitasking for is the background audio feature.

+1
Use this A LOT...No more having to start the audio over again and navigate to the desired stream when a phone call comes in...Of course it helps that three of my favorite audio apps (WunderRadio, AccuRadio and TWIT Player) are now iOS4 multitasking capable...:D
