Strange, maybe it's to get rid of the old stock so they can get 2.0 models as standard.
 
Try ebuyer and amazon for amazing prices too, when they say software update, though, remember that you will not get 2.0 but the jan update, thus, seeing as you'll be buying the 2.0 update anyway, it's probably worth going for the non january updates and cheaper touches!

It is common that the Jan update version is more expensive than the non update version, as they're allowing for the additional cost of updating your iPod touch over iTunes.

I just got a new 16GB touch for £195 from eBay. I'd imagine this is without the updates, but still a very good price.
