My pre-order is scheduled for the second week of Oct. The Apple store had what I wanted, and they said they could cancel the pre-order, but it would take "up to" 48 hours for the subsidy to reappear. So the choice became stick with the pre-order or take the chance that I'll be able to still get it in store 1-2 days from now. FML.

That's not true. If you cancel your pre-order online and CALL AT&T they will reset your subsidy immediately. Some people had issues but many more had completely success with 1-2 calls after cancelling.
