Curious, just noticed this in my music app on my iPhone 6 and iPod touch 5G.

When scrolling through the artists, each artist has a picture next to their name. However, these pictures are often not one of their album covers. Often times they are one of their album covers, but many times they are not - they are just an artsy pic of the artist themselves or whatever.

Is this normal? Do a lot of artists have a specific picture just for this purpose, that is not an album cover? Assuming it is, just not sure where iTunes or the music app is pulling this unique picture from.

This was introduced in iOS 7 after the Music app was redesigned (not necessarily for the better...).

I'm not sure where it's pulling them from through, I presume from iTunes.

Yes. Yes, they do.

When the artist doesn't have a specific picture, then the Music App will select one of your album covers. And if that album doesn't have artwork, you'll get a text cover.
