Hi all,

Is anyone using both an ASD and 3rd party 4K monitor as their desk setup? Are the differences in resolution, brightness, glare, and whatever else distracting at all? I would like to buy an ASD to use alongside my LG 34 inch 5K2K when connected to my M1 Pro. I also prefer the LG for my windows work PC.

Thanks.

I’ve been using 27 inch 4K over the past 4 years and at 2560x1440 scaled (dell 2718q) and I recently bought a ASD.

Resolution wise, running at 2560x1440, the text looks much sharper on the ASD - could be partly due to the glass finish rather than the matte finish on the 2718q.

Brightness - about the same - but I am not maxing out brightness on either display.

Glare - I am not having any glare issues with the ASD. Did not have any issues with the dell either.

I originally had 2x 2718q's and changed one of them out to the ASD. The ASD is a much better display for what I do - text based work. However, running 1 matte finish display next to the ASD was distracting enough for me (along with the difference in text sharpness) that I decided to buy a second ASD.

Overall, I’m glad I upgraded.

Thanks for sharing. If the 2718q had a glass finish, would you have kept it? Was the difference in resolution, particularly sharpness in reading text, distracting and enough of a reason to replace that with another ASD?

Hard to say. Would probably have been okay if lets say the 2718q had everything the same except the resolution.

However, build quality of the ASD pushed me to replacing both 2718q's. Also the 2718 has really bad image retention so that also pushed. me

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot on my end and see if I can tolerate my LG. The LG does come in handy though when I need to use my windows laptop for work. I’ve read they work fine on the ASD except that you can’t adjust the brightness from the PC, it will use the same brightness level you used on the Mac before disconnecting. And speaking of disconnecting, I’ll need to do that regularly since there is no switch on the ASD.

Btw, are you getting the tilt only stand?

I was using a 32" Samsung 4K and 27" TB display with my M1 Mini but when I switched it out with the Mac Studio Max, the 32" Samsung would only display 30Hz which is strange when it would display 60Hz from the Mini.

Also, since the matte plastic front of the Samsung did not display the text, font sharpness, and other issues, I dumped my Samsung.

I prefer the glass fronts of the Apple displays so since I also got the Studio Display (right) and currently using it with the 27" TB display (left) and 60" HDTV (top):

I did purchase the tilt only stand. I'm thinking about returning and getting 2x vesa mount ASD's
Wouldn’t that take away from the overall aesthetics and clean look of the ASD? I figure that’s a big part of why folks are willing to pay a premium over other displays, though most of them are 4K and not 5K

Looks great. I might dump my LG 34 inch for a dual ASD set up.

Using dual Studio displays with VESA mounts will free up desk space.

I would love to put both displays on a desk mounted VESA arm to free up the desk space but the arm mounts are not very good in quality - they are flimsy due to the weight of the 27" ATD.
