If one’s precious and cherished watch should have an unfortunate incident and it is clear it cannot be repaired, does Apple still return it to their repair place or do they replace it in person?

It gets sent off to the repair depot and if it can’t be repaired it gets replaced.

If you have apple care you can call apple. They will send you a new watch right away and put a hold on your credit card until they receive the defective watch. That’s my experience.

All replacement Watches are issued from a repair depot offsite from Apple Stores. Apple does and will not repair the Apple Watch in store, nor do they carry replacement Watches in store.
