Assigning a keyboard shortcut to launch an application

Hello all,

I want to be able to set keyboard shortcuts to launch applications. Is there any way this is possible? I tried in system preferences, but that seems to be only for shortcuts within already running apps.

PS I'm a newbie to Macs, so please be nice if this is really obvious and I just missed it.

New to Macs? Install Quicksilver. Make your own custom triggers (aka keyboard shortcuts).

LifeHacker has some excellent tutorials on Quicksilver. It's much, much more than an app launcher, though it does that especially well.
