Hey all,

I'm doing an assignment, and I basically have to first select an event which would have had an impact on share prices of 5 different publically listed companies. Obviously there's a lot more to the assignment, but it is vital that I choose wisely.

It has already been stated that we cannot choose 9/11.

Any ideas? I have a few but not so confident on them at this stage. Since this forum is filled with those that pay attention to this sort of thing, I thought, why not.

Cheers.

Black Tuesday (or any other event from that time) would be a bit heavy I think. We only need 5 companies, not the whole exchange

I was originally thinking of the London Bombing, but finding 5 companies would be tricky I think.

Here is a fun one: the release of the iPod and the effect it had on the other MP3 player companies and distibutors, nevermind how it improved Apple's financial status

how about hurricane katrina? that affected alot of business on the gulf coast in both new orleans and miss. hard rock sure took a hit, as their hotel that was almost open never did. a bunch of smaller business went under, and the bigger ones took a major hit. also, i think houston business went up slightly with the additional residents in the city.

you can also use other hurricanes as well, like charley, ivan, andrew, etc.

Hurricane Katrina sounds like a good one. I took a look at the Wikipedia article and it mentions oil, insurance, and a couple of other industries. It however doesn't mention any specific companies. I'm going to further my research on this, but if anyone wants to add anything, that would be great.

Cheers.

how about look at companies based in new orleans, biloxi or gulfport, or in the case of the oil companies, owned the offshore oil plants. you can get at least five in there. look at the wikipedia articles over there.

hard rock is one, it can represent the casino industry. it shouldn't be too hard to find four more.

Thanks for that. It's a little difficult for me knowing which companies specifically, as I am not American. Getting there though !
