the america!
how do i choose more homophonic mandarin characters while my input selection is set on Zhuyin (not in pinyin)? coming from windows, all i have to do is press the down key and it gives me a list of all other like-sounding characters. unfortunately, i have not yet figured out the trick for the mac input method. any suggestions?

I am guessing, but I would expect that what you want can be done in the keyboard and character viewer.

To put the keyboard viewer in your top menubar (at the top of the screen near the date/time: open system prefs, open language and text, click on input sources, activate the keyboard and character viewer (if you haven't already), click the check box to "show input in menu bar (this option is located near the bottom of the preference window).

In the future all you have to do is go to the character viewer or keyboard viewer from the new drop down menu. In the keyboard viewer you can click on the keys as you mention in your post.
