I know that to associate a file with an app, i click 'open with' then check the always open... box but os x doesn't save that info with some files types. For example, i sometimes open windows .nfo files with the text app in os x but they stay as unrecognised files afterwards. if i right click the nfo file and go to 'open with', text isn't even there as a suggested app. i have to manually drill down to the applications folder and locate the app each time. any suggestions? thanks guys, dren.

Find one of the files, highlight it and then hit apple+i to bring up the info window.

On the info window you'll see an "Open with" section. Select the app you want, then hit "Change All" and all the files of that extension will open with that app in the future.

that seems to have worked, nice one. there isn't a 'change all' option if you right click and open with. the text app now appears if i right click and select open with. thanks, dren
