Using Macs since the 1990's this tops the list of things I cannot explain.

This morning I went to launch VLC. Hit command space and typed VLC. No app. Looked in the apps folder and it was not there.

Soon realized the following apps also disappeared from my apps folder:

  • MailMate
  • 1Password
  • ThinkofSwim
  • Carbon Copy Cloner
  • Visual Studio Code
  • SpamSeive
When I reinstalled the apps all the preferences are still there and everything loaded as if the app had never gone missing. Mail brought back all my email with all the settings, CCC had my tasks.

All the apps I had pinned to my dock no longer had their icons in the dock, or a ghost icon with a question mark. That seems really odd.

This seems impossible. I can see accidentally tossing one app, but 6 at one time? There has to be an Occam's Razor explanation I'm missing. This is a new Mac Mini Pro with 13.4.1 I've been setting up the past few weeks.

And how did you re-install? TimeMachine, CCC, download installers from corresponding sites?

They were on the new Mini prior to this morning?
They were on there yesterday evening. For example, last night I was trying to copy video files from one folder to another folder and accidentally dropped them in an open Visual Studio Code window. This morning when I reinstalled VSC those tabs with all the video files came back with it. I even ran CCC last night to copy all my photos and videos taken from trip from which we had just returned.

Do you see any interesting log messages for that time window?

The most obvious reasons I could see for why multiple apps were removed are:
- install disk ejected/unavailable
- drive/folder corruption (including permissions getting goofed up)
- CCC/Time Machine/Etc restoring to an earlier state

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't see anything relevant to issue in the logs.

I used to have CCC make a copy of my OS drive but I've given up on that and now don't copy apps or the OS with CCC.
