Astropad Studio Gains Support for Apple Pencil Pro Controls

Astropad today announced a major update for the Astropad Studio app, introducing new features that work with the Apple Pencil Pro that Apple launched earlier this year. Astropad Studio is designed to turn the iPad into a drawing tablet that can be used with PC and Mac creative apps.

The 5.4 version of Astropad Studio supports Squeeze Gesture Shortcuts, so you can set custom shortcuts to swap between your preferred tools using the Squeeze feature on the Apple Pencil Pro.
It also adds support for barrel rotation, which takes advantage of the gyroscope that Apple added to the Apple Pencil.

Turning and twirling the Apple Pencil Pro when using Astropad precisely rotates the brush while drawing, and as of now, Astropad Studio is the only drawing tablet option that supports barrel roll rotation.

Along with these features, there is a new Adaptive Image Rendering video compression algorithm that provides 53 percent clearer image quality during high-motion content like rotating an object in blender or previewing animations. Astropad says that Astropad Studio now has a feature set that puts it on par with the Wacom Cintiq drawing tablets.

A one-year Astropad license is available for $60, while a lifetime license is priced at $120. These are sale prices that can be obtained by entering the promo code SUMMER24 at checkout on the Astropad website.

...I've never heard of Astropad before this. 🤪 But it looks like it does the same stuff as EasyCanvas, just for 10x the price...?

I don't see the lifetime license listed on their site. The usual 1 year license is $80 a year. The reason we're told companies need to move to subscription is because it incentivizes them to add new features on a regular basis.

Why did it take this long to add these features to the pencil-- which is basically this app's whole reason for being?

To the Pencil Pro? Well, considering that a lot of the other drawing apps like Procreate finally released their support for the Apple Pencil Pro about 3 weeks ago or so, its because they didn't have a chance to start development for it until the Pencil was released and it's not something they can quickly flip a switch on. They had to do a ton of development for it

There is none. There used to be one just called Astropad...but it didn't have all the gestures or adjustable pressure curve, etc.

It is extremely performant and well done, intended for professionals who need this sort of setup. With that said, I never heard of EasyCanvas, I'll give it a look.

Astropad and Luna are garbage apps. They refuse to optimize for latency and speed and what you get is a crummy experience about on par with a poor man's DisplayLink.

Sidecar's not perfect, but miles ahead of both of those. The moment that compromising to 30hz is even a glancing thought, you've failed hard as an external display app.
