So I went to 2 AT&T's and an Apple Store yesterday to actually get the scoop on this. If you are on a family plan, and aren't eligible for an upgrade, but would like to use another family member or friends upgrade eligibility, you will have to purchase your iPhone in an AT&T store. If you order the handset via Apple or any other company the mini-sim serial number will be linked to that particular number that was used to verify upgrade eligibility and will deactivate the phone number that you ordered the phone on when you try to activate the new phone.
Long story short, the pre-order snafu actually saved me big time yesterday. Looks like I'm gonna have to go to AT&T on release morning, but that's fine with me. I'll be on a road trip at the time and will have plenty of opportunities to find an AT&T store with availability. I should be around the Ohio area at that time, so I should have a few major cities within a few hours of each other that I can pillage.
