We own the iPhone outright. A friend of ours could really use the phone so we are planning to give it to her. Once unlocked, will she be able to take it to Verizon, get a SIM from them and use it on their networki haven't dealt with Verizon in 20+ years so I really haven't kept up with their network.

Unfortunately, the answer to the OP's question is No.

You can use a Verizon iPhone 5 (or higher) on AT&T, but not the other way around, regardless of unlock status. Verizon will simply refuse to authorize the phone, whether or not a valid SIM is installed.

Besides, CDMA radio isn't enabled on the GSM iPhone 5s/5c anyway so that's a major limitation if you actually need to make calls and stuff.

Bummer. Just trying to be nice to someone having a rough go of it. Maybe she'll consider switching carriers. AT&T seems to be a bit stronger in our area anyway.

Thanks for the helpful replies from most of you.
