AT&T iphone iTunes unlock help pls

Hi,

I have 2 lines (iphone 6+ & iphone 5s) with AT&T. I paid-off the NEXT plan dues and requested for unlock. AT&T approved it and sent me instructions to unlock via iTunes. They have asked me to do a back up and restore it. I'm planning to switch to T-mobile this week.

My questions:
1.Do we really need to do backup and restore? Will it erase my existing data in the phone and do a factory reset of my phone?
Will i loose other data like SMS messages,whatsapp message etc?
2. I read it macforums posted by an user than we dont need to do an iTunes restore, if AT&T says its unlocked my phone will be unlocked correct ?
3. Any other steps i should do before i unlock my device or be aware for T-mobile switch ?

1. No, you don't have to restore your phone to unlock it. See link above.
