I know that Verizon requires even a single line user to have their shared plan. I read on AT&T's cost calculator you need to have a minimum of 2 phones on their shared plan (but Apple's website does not specify this when purchasing a new iPhone when showing comparison between all 3 carriers plans). I'm currently an AT&T individual plan holder, but I noticed with 1 line on the AT&T shared plan its only $85 (unlimited min, unlimited texts, 1gb data) versus the $99 I pay now (900 min, unlimited texts, 200mb data). Also, the share plan lets me do facetime over cellular and personal hotspot, while individual plans don't let me do that. Here's the Apple link comparing the 3 plans:

Does someone as an individual user have the AT&T share plan with just 1 line on the account? If not, whats the best plan for me as an individual user? And how can an individual user access facetime over cellular?

Log into your account and see if it lets you change your current plan to a Share plan.

Looks like it should work. I tested it out as if I was a new AT&T customer, chose an iPhone 5 as the device and then the 1GB Mobile Share plan as my monthly service plan and got to the checkout page, so looks like it's not a problem.

Thanks for the info.. It might work but I read in the fine print that "if you are not using a smartphone in the shared plan" then AT&T can put you into a proper individual plan. Although an iPhone 5 is a smartphone, I'm afraid theyll move me back into an individual plan that I don't prefer if they see I'm only a 1 line user. Has anyone actually set this up with AT&T with their iPhone 5 as a lone line user and they said its okay to do? I also noticed there's a mobile hotspot feature, can I use my phone to connect to my laptop where there's no WIFI if I'm in this plan even if my laptop is not added to the shared plan itself? Or is the hotspot only going to work for devices added to the plan?

I think the hotspot fee is for devices that actually connect to the network themselves, not through tethering, so like a 3G iPad for a laptop with a 3G card.

I really think you'll be ok. The Mobile Share plan isn't really a Mobile Family Share plan I don't think, it means sharing the data even with other devices that you yourself use.

Even if I don't have any other devices.. I just have my iPhone, no iPad or anything else. I don't quite understand the hotspot thing, why would I need a hotspot for a 3G iPad when it has 3G just like the iPhone? If one works, so should the other.. how could one possibly hotspot the other if they both use the same service?

yes - i am on it with one line, for 1GB i think it is $85 + tax a month.....

i think it is $10 to add a device for hotspot....

You wouldn't.

The hotspot thing would be used for a WiFi only iPad, or if you don't want to activate/use the 3G service on your 3G iPad.

They let you add a 3G iPad to your Mobile Share plan so you can use it without having to tether it to your iPhone let's say.

I'm on it also with one iPhone. Saved $50 going this route. My old setup was $135 before taxes, now it's $85.

Luckily i have wifi almost everywhere I go, so data only comes in to play at the occasional store or restaurant.

new plan: 1GB shared, + iPhone

old plan: unlimited calling, unlimited text, 4GB data + tethering
