I was managing my AT&T account online when I decided to check my upgrade eligibility (I've been debating ditching my iPhone 5 for a Galaxy Note II) and I, kind of as a har-har, checked the eligibility on the iPad.

And I qualify for a full upgrade!

What the hell? Is this normal my fellow AT&T users?

I would capitalize on this but:

1. I worry about them catching on and manually adjusting the price.
2. Be obligating my iPad to some higher-than-$10-a-month plan.

any device with a cellular connection gets assigned a phone #. That number can be used for an upgrade to get something like a new iPhone subsidized. Wont affect the iPad at all.

You can use your iPad eligibility to upgrade your phone at the fully subsidized price. It's called a Cross Upgrade.

My only concern is: Will I be effectively be signing another 2 yr contract?

As in I'll have to pay the $10 on my Mobile Share plan for tablets for two years?

Or is this just AT&T saying "Hey come get a subsidized phone bro!"?

Yes, you will be signing a two year contract for the number associated with the iPad line that used the upgrade.

Say you use the iPad line to upgrade to an iPhone 5 for another line (upgrade swap), do you still get to keep the iPad line data only + 2yr contract?
