I know this question has been asked before. On a family plan. All members are eligible for an upgrade. Want to use one of the family members' upgrades, so that they upgrade their iPhone on their line - I get (steal with permission) family members new iPhone (they continue to use their old iPhone) so my line/phone does not reset to a new 2-year contract by doing a switch at an AT&T store.

Now, if this works and I successfully switch the new acquired phone on a family members line to mine - is that new iPhone still considered - locked or unlocked - since my 'line' is still free from any contract/new device? Does the contract follow the phone, therefore keeping it locked if it were to switch to my possession?

I was thinking of doing the above to get an unlocked iPhone 6 to be able to use overseas as I plan to travel. And no, I do not wish to purchase an unlocked phone if I still plan to return after two weeks and continue to use AT&T. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!
