Hi there,

With AT&T's new no-commitement option, does the iPhone come unlocked?

No, it doesn't come unlocked in the USA. If I understand your intentions.... the only other carrier the phone can work on in the USA, once unlocked by you, is T-Mobile. BUT - the data would only work over EDGE not 3G.

My intentions were to use the iPhone outside of the US.

So It doesn't come unlocked wit the no committment plan.

Why is it so? It a user is not committed to AT&T the phone could come unlocked otherwise you end up committed to AT&T all the same, since you can only use the phone with AT&T. I find it a bit odd.

Welcome to the club.

It is not a regular phone, it is iPhone. That's why.

I hate it too!

Due to our lack of good consumer protection laws.

I bought my iPhone 3G unlocked in Europe. I will be doing the same with the iPhone 4, though I may look at someone making these available in the US. If not, I'll be in Europe this summer and I'll pick it up then.
