AT&T - On a family plan, can I upgrade to iPhone and just add data?

An AT&T store employee said I can stick with my current family plan, upgrade to the iPhone 5, and only be paying additionally for the phone, the $36 activation fee, and the data plan. True?

Yep. That's what I did some time ago.

You're essentially just adding a data plan to your device unless you get a shared plan.

I just have a data plan for my iPhone.

Simple.
