I can't find a similar topic so I'll post one. I'm on the 4th year of my current iPhone but plan to go with a XS 256GB. Seeing as I'm not a fan of tacking on an additional $35-$45 or whatever to my monthly bill, I plan to just buy it outright. Back when I got my last iPhones, the plans were structured differently. If I keep the same plan, will my bill go down? Since they used to charge much less ($399 for a 6 plus last time), I figured the 'price' of the phone was already part of the charges on the bill.

Nope. With the AT&T plans they currently offer, and have been for the past 2 years, the cost of the phone is NOT baked into the plan.

The plans are NOT any cheaper buying the phone outright vs. installments.

If your plan is 4 years old with a subsidy you might look at a newer plan. The older plans cost more but at least you got to upgrade phones every two years for a small fee. Now if you upgrade with one of the older plans you will pay the higher plan fee plus pay for the phone in either installments or you buy it outright.
