for the privledged few that have their mac pros can they help me to know how quiet their graphics card are...preferably those with 2.8 or even 3.0 chips. I am hearing some bad things about the 8800GT being a bit noisy and I do audio not video so noise comes first.

not with a mac per se

check out all the hits when you google: NVIDIA 8800Gt loud

Hmm, yeah.

Well my old desktop rig is a custom built with a Geforce 7800GTX 512mb...they made like 1000 of them total, and I know when that thing starts hauling, it sounds like a vaccuum. Granted, it uses the G70 core and is a dual slot cooler.

The 8800 uses a much smaller GPU die and a single slot cooler, but I guess time will tell with the Mac version.

well...i like the idea of waiting for 10.5.2 to come all spec'd out for my new mac pro but unless i am waiting for this card which I being discouraged to go with...i am starting to lean toward the ati...not hearing any reports of it being loud yet.

did you read the part about the high pitch noise for the 8800?!?!?!?!?

FWIW, the ATI 2600XT was strongly criticized for being extremely power hungry, and significantly slower than the 8-series nVidia cards.

power hungry?! where are you hearing this? i mean it does have flames on it but i didn't think it would get that hot!!!

I am working only in Logic Pro for this computer if I decide to do video editing (unlikely) then I will get later a better card ...that doesn't make a high pitch noise.

Power hungry, as it uses more wattage to power it.

Attached is a chart...

Nevermind, I keep thinking the Mac Pro uses the 2900XT. I keep forgetting they used the weak 2600 in there.

i get that. i would think that would mean more heat...but it doesn't as looking at the 8800 it seems that it runs hotter than the ati. i try to be green but i need audio recordings without fan noise! soooooo...i am not being persuaded yet to go with the 8800.
