So, it seems the 2009 ATI Radeon HD 4870 is finally off the Apple Store... but oddly enough, the also 2009 nVidia GT120 is still selling.

Can we assume the 4870 is discontinued? will anyone miss it now the 5770 and 5870 are here? and why keep the GT120?

IMO the 4870 was a good card - the only problem was its power consumption.

Well hopefully this means the 5870 is going to be shipping soon then, though it may just be a supply thing, there are no more 4870's to sell. The 4870 is a more powerful at most tasks, especially 3d (OGL) than the 5770 is. So if the 5870 never becomes available to non-mp 2010 users less choice will be crappy.

Don't read into it too much. The 4870 was removed from many international Apple Stores earlier in the year. Yet here we are, many months later, and the 5870 is still unavailable.

It's still listed in the UK store at the bargain price of £286 plus Free Shipping(!). Interestingly, availability is 3-4 months.....read into that what you will.
