ATI 5870 MDP-VGA OK MDP-DVI dead

I have an Apple ATI 5870 with one monitor connected via DVI while another via midi display port - VGA.
If I attempt to connect mini display port - DVI I get no signal.

Is this a common issue with the 5870 (or ATI) cards in general?
BTW this is on 2010 10.12.6
