Although not yet announced an interesting new Cypress-based card has popped up online, a Radeon HD 5870 boasting 2GB of GDDR5 memory, which is double the amount found on current models, and featuring no less than six Mini DisplayPort outputs. Dropping the dual DVI and HDMI ports for more DP connectors enables AMD to offer a top notch, DirectX 11 solution that supports multi-monitor configurations of up to six displays via the ATI Eyefinity technology - pretty sweet if you can afford the setup.

Apart from the I/O change and extra VRAM, the new card also comes with an 8-pin and one 6-pin PCIe power connector, as opposed to the 'regular' HD 5870 which makes use of two 6-pin plugs. The 6DP Radeon HD 5870 packs 1600 Stream Processors and has stock GPU/memory clocks of 850/4800 MHz.

The Eyefinity-crazy card's price is yet unconfirmed.

I think this 6 Mini-DisplayPort card is actually the Mac version, since no one uses Mini-DisplayPort except for Apple.

While each accelerator supports six displays in all, multiple accelerators can be installed on the same PC without any multi-GPU setup, to scale the size of the resulting display by up to 24 displays and up to 268 megapixels of effective resolution.

This looks like it is aimed at super large displays (268 megapixels) rather than Apple. The TDP according to other sources is 325 W.

Not at all. Apple made MDP available for licensing in attempt to try and get some other people to use it. Looks like they've just had their first bite...

No. The Mac Pro doesn't have enough PCIe power feeds for 2 of these - you could possibly jury-rig a solution but it wouldn't be elegant in the slightest. Crossfire may/may not work.

Not with internal power. You would need an external 12 V power supply of respectable size.

Not 2 on the current (2006-2009) Mac Pros, unless apple adds more pci power connectors in the next Mac Pro which I think would be nice and hopefully they'll add the 5870 to the Mac lineup of GPUs.
