Hey guys,

I am thinking of buying a used 5 from att. If I unlock it and use on T-Mobile, will I get LTE speeds? I'm in the suburbs of Chicago. Won't buy it if I only get HSPA+ speeds.

Thanks

Depends on the iphone 5 model and when it was build.
You might not even get HSPA+ and just be stuck with 2G Edge.
LTE you should be able to get if its available in your area and the bands are compatible.
Also unlocking an AT&T iphone is not easy or cheap either.

That's the model number. I'm under the impression att will unlock the phone for free

You're under the wrong impression:D
You have to meet their requirements in order for them to unlock it.

About the model number I'm not 100%.
I have an early AT&T i5 and its a MD634LL/A without all HSPA+ frequencies used by T Mobile.
I think yours is newer and should be able to connect to all T Mobile 3G bands.

iPhones are expensive to unlock using a third party service! Check the cost before buying the phone!

Thanks for the heads up man. Saved me from wasting money. I guess that person wasnt even a former ATT user. I just assumed unlocking it would have been no problem. She was selling it for $280. Ended up getting a 5S for $400.
