I was comparing phone specs for a friend the other day, and noticed that the spec for the iPhone4's GSM transceiver is 7.2mbps.

The iPhone 4 has a maximum downlink speed of 14.4Mbps and a maximum uplink speed of 5.8Mbps.

The 3Gs has a maximum downlink speed of 7.2Mbps.

Fat-fingered send button to soon...

Anyway... I reliably hit 3/1mbps, but yesterday I scored a 5/1mbps near my home. Is that pretty much max it can practically do?

Then it also leaves me wondering... 3-5mbps... Who needs 4g, were at fracking broadband speed already!

The fastest AT&T's network can currently get is 7.2Mbps down and 2.2Mbps up. In the future or in other countries where it is giving better services, the iPhone 4 can reach its maximum speeds. But remember, you'll never see a radio device preform at the number on the paper. Only in labs and highly control environments will it ever get to those speeds.
