ATT USB Modem SIM in an iPad2

Perhaps a new spin on an old topic. I have a AT&T USB modern with a full sized SIM and unlimited data plan. If I were to cut that down to micro sim size, would I be able to use that in the iPad2 directly rather than boot up the macbook and setup a local wifi hotspot?

Has anyone tried this? Seems as if it should work since it's already a data only device and on the proper network. Are there any special settings that need to be changed?
