Attachment problems as well as uploading

Hello,

I am having trouble uploading and attaching word documents when using my MacBook to WebCT and GMail. I save as .rtf (as my class requires) but when I upload to WebCT is says "Unknown Binary" and when I try and attach to an e-mail and access it from a school computer it shows up "Unknown File" Is there some sort of compatibility issue here? Even when I upload and try to download the file on my MacBook it gives me an error.

Help please!
