Here, for no reason whatsoever, are my first impressions after having received the new Apple TV 4K last night. This replaced the previous-gen ATV4K in my man cave room, which now serves in the living room with a slightly older non- Dolby vision TV.

  • Having owned and used Roku, Chromecast with Google TV, and fire sticks/cubes, dongles, ATV is still the cream of the crop, and, in my opinion, worth what they charge. Yes, it should be cheaper, but the entire experience is second to none. Chromecast with GTV is a close second, the roku interface is from the dark ages, and the fire tv experience leaves a lot to be desired, not to mention the fire sticks, from my experience, have awful performance issues.
  • Remote: am I one of the few people who liked the previous remote? I actually not only didn't mind it, I liked it. Never lost it, appreciated the touch surface for fast navigation, and always enjoyed it to the larger, cheaper feeling remotes from everyone else. I like this new remote, even though it looks like the original silver remote and the first siri remote had a love child and this was the result. Has a cool retro Apple look to it, and I like that it's a little larger. I see why it had to be upgraded, but I never had an issue with the last version.
  • I see, so far, absolutely no difference in the performance between this and the previous gen. Just my opinion. Will be using it all weekend and will update this as I go.
Just my two cents.

Mine came at the same time as my new iMac so that got all the attention. I’ll. Be upgrading from an ATV-HD so I expect to see some difference. Even more so with my LG OLED tv. I had a love/hate relationship with the old remote. Sometimes I really liked it and other times I wanted to throw it at the wall.

What color iMac did you get? What do you think, so far? Have an M1 Mini so not in the market for one, but my GF will be able to upgrade her 4K 21" 2017 iMac to one over the summer.

I was someone that actually really liked the previous gen remote. Have the previous gen ATV 4K boxes on all my TVs.

I picked up the new one yesterday. The new remote takes some getting used to. It’s very usable but I’m not sure yet which remote I prefer. The buttons on the new remote fell very “clicky”. I think I prefer the older remote in that respect. My 12 year old son picked up the new remote and couldn’t understand why they’d change the remote, he said the new one feels cheap.

As far as performance of the new Apple TV vs the previous gen 4K Apple TV, I immediately noticed a difference in apps loading faster and my iTunes movie and tv show libraries populate much faster. In that respect I’m pleased. All in all, it’s a minor upgrade compared to the previous gen. But I agree that when it comes to streaming platforms, the ATV is the cream of the crop.

Similar thoughts to your son.

We have 6 first gen ATV4K's and I'd bought new remotes for all of them -- and I think they are going back (only opened one to use yesterday).

The buttons do indeed feel cheaper/clickier - just not as nice somehow. I also can't stand how they moved the play/pause from where it was. In the dark, it's so much easier to find and zero in on that bottom left location and now that's "mute" instead. Might be a re-learn thing, but ultimately I think it's the wrong place to have it now, just from a usability standpoint. Also, several times I accidentally invoked Siri while using the touch/D-pad due to how my hand wants to grab the remote when working with the touchpad. The Siri button seems way to easy to press.

If I'm being honest, all I really ever wanted on the older remote was a way to do "mute" with some key combo in software.

Most everything else about the new remote is a lateral move (or worse) for me -- it's also a bit sharp on the edges and I'd likely need to put it in a silicone case (as I have my 1st gen remotes).

Your second bullet invalidates you credibility. Sorry. ;)

I just picked up a 2021 Apple TV 4K to replace a nVidia Shield Pro I’ve been using for a few years. Overall I am very pleased.

This would an an absolutely perfect box if it allowed audio pass through to an external receiver.

To me the benefits of having my HomeKit integrated into the TV outweighs the audio limitation but come on Apple; allow pass through.

Anyone having problems playing back HDR content from Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc? My Vizio tv is recognizing the Dolby Vision fine on all apps, but if it's just HDR, it doesn't flag it, and the tv just plays it as SDR. Also, it's showing the label under your owned devices as just an Apple TV, not the 4K like the old one (not a big deal, but just odd). Found this on my phone under settings, tapping on my name, and then looking at my owned Apple devices. I had the older 4K version and never had any problems with it sending out the 4K signal properly.

Mine shows HDR or Dolby deeding on the content in Amazon app etc. Im using SDR with dynamic and frame match on

I am not 100% sure the new AppleTV actually is using HDMI 2.1. The new display mode (4K60 HDR) still appears to use TMDS (HDMI 2.0 timing standard) and it appears to drop to YCbCr422 when playing HDR content when I explicitly chose YCbCr444.

Can anyone else with a LG OLED verify? Press the green button on the remote 8 times to display the HDMI link info.

I got the red/pink. I have the Product(Red) iPhone XR and the back of the iMac matches almost exactly except for a more metallic finish. I was using a 2015 MBA so the speed and extra memory makes it very snappy. Still getting used to the change from Catalina to Big Sur. The screen size is perfect for me - had been using a Thunderbolt Display with the Air and it was too tall for me. The 24” fits much better on my desk. My wife now wants one too, in blue.

I loved the old remote too. Having Siri and a touchpad was revolutionary. But the power and mute buttons is what made me order the new one.

But I keep hitting mute when I want to pause😒

That remote is a real head scratcher.
- Premium materials, cheap loud click
- iPod scroll wheel that doesnt universally scroll
- Identical button layout, trolling button function swap

Its odd because on paper this looks like a clear improvement but in real world use then some of these choices seem untested.

i picked up mine yesterday, i have 3 other 4K units around the house.

the new one is hooked to my LG OLED CX via HDMI 2.1, when i check current stats (Grren button), yes its still using TMDS, i do not think they have unlocked the full capability just yet, not necessary, as the TM pipeline can carry what it can currently do. Well according to “stop the FOMO” channel.

he addresses all that in this video.

Thank you for sharing.
My Apple TV is to arrive next Tuesday and it‘s my first one. Only been using Kodi on a raspberry pi with the app on the iPad. Has a high waf (woman acceptance factor) since my wife had no problems whatsoever with it from the beginning.

I hope the experience is even better than Kodi.

So far I'm very pleased with my new ATV4K. I've never owned an ATV before, but really love the new device with the new Siri Remote. It blows away the FireTV Stick 4K I've tried before.

Though, I've got one question regarding the default apps. Is it normal that only those Apps in the screenshot are listed after the initial setup of the ATV? I expected to see much more streaming apps preloaded, but my home screen looked empty like this (I know, Apps can be installed easily ;)):

Yeah his video is what prompted me to look at mine. On the face of it Apple is touting hdmi 2.1 but not using it at all.

got the new Apple TV few days ago. I have Oled 65CX connected and I’m experiencing dropped frames likes crazy. Also it has trouble staying in HD resolution as the picture continually drops to lower quality. I swap back and forth with the old Apple TV and that one does not do this. Tested it a dozen times. Something is not right. All settings identical.

Try a different hdmi cable?
Actually, how is the new AppleTV connecting to your network? Maybe it is more sensitive to network signal fluctuations?

I have mine set that way, also. I’m using it on a Vizio tv right now at a friends house. I’m out of town for a couple weeks. When I get home I’ll test it with my LG Oled and my TCL. I’ve tried everything to ge tit to recognize the hdr 10 on this set, but it will not. Again, Dolby Vision is recognized just fine.
