The Apple refurb store has it for $99 but I’m wondering if it makes sense to purchase it as it’s almost two years old. I want to get 5 years of support like my 1st Gen 4K has received.

The 2022 model makes more sense to get, but I want the Ethernet port version and I really don’t want to spend the extra $50 if the 2021 model can get me several years of updates.

The 21 model is still good - tbh there’s no reason I would want to upgrade mine, it’s perfectly fast enough, unless you have a Samsung tv and need to use hdr 10+. It still has thread/matter, Ethernet/Wi-Fi and looks great on my Sony too. Some have complained about problems with the remote, and issues with playback, and I have recently seen someone post showing the relative build quality (the new one does not win). Personally I would grab a bargain 21 and hold out for the next version.

That's a good deal but like Topiary stated " unless you have a Samsung tv and need to use hdr 10+". The 2021 model has the wifi and ethernet.

Then you might have to get the new one for $50 more. If you do get the new model, it might be best to get the 2021 remote. The tv or remote is causing issues with the new remote.

Considering the Apple TV HD (released in 2015) and the 1st gen 4K (released in 2017) are still receiving software updates I think the 2021 4K should be good for a number of years. Hard to say how many years for sure.

Love my 2021 model. Works great for me. As someone else said, I don't see Apple discontinuing support for the 2021 4K models any time soon. Five years should be doable.

Buy right away. I own it ad it's "magical". It has Dolby Vision and it works flawlessly. Speed? If you have TV with Google TV, Vidaa or Tizen or WebOS, you'll se it's blazing flash compared to those.

I mean I still have my first gen 4k as well as my HD (2015), and both still work great and got updated last night. Granted, the HD is connected to a 720p TV so it's not exactly taxed even for it, and it causes major issues whenever it serves as my home hub (which I have disabled now), but it has been running like a champ going on 8 years now.

I don't really get why Apple felt that 2nd gen 4k couldn't handle HDR10+, considering it can handle Dolby Vision, but that affects only a portion of the market. Only if you buy a Samsung or Panasonic (which isn't even sold in the US) TV do you even have to worry about HDR10+. Given that the studios do all of their masters in Dolby Vision, I think Samsung is going to lose this particular format war.

Regardless, I felt better spending for the latest and greatest just this last weekend given how long my HD has been going. But I did think strongly about getting the 2nd gen.

Best Buy has the 32gb '21 model for $105 new, and less than $90 open box fair condition, depending on store location. the 64gb model is also still available with open box models available. the latest models are also available in open box condition at a discount.
