Guys, will AirPlay 2 on the Apple TV 4K allow me to switch lights on / off and control my thermostat when I'm away from home IF the ATV is on standby?

nothing to do with airplay 2

that's home kit, and yes it works on standby

it would be kinda silly for apple to make a function that's be used when you're out of the house that automatically disables itself if you're out of the house

Like mentioned this doesn’t have anything to do with AirPlay.

However probably not. The main hub needs to report as “connected”. Standby just means that particular hub is waiting to take over if the “Connected” hub disconnects.

Regardless of whether it’s connected, in standby or disable the Siri remote will still allow you to use automated devices on your home network from that ATV.

That said I have a friend who uses an AppleTV 3 and it always reports “standby” and it works as expected.

Do you have a hub that reports connected or is it just standby?

I’m away from home, this is mine.

Where do you get this view on your iPhone?
Can't find it in standard iOS 11 settings. Could it be a vendor-specific thing?

This screen was taken in the Home app. Btw. I'm having a 4th gen ATV am able to check/modify my lights when I'm not at home and the ATV is on standby. Since it's an ARM based computer, like your phone, it still "computes" when in standby. ;) So maybe the term "standby" is wrong/confusing then..

Thanks guys for the replies. And please do forgive my absolute lack of knowledge on all this tech stuff. I feel like I'm fast becoming one of those people who struggle with all this new tech stuff!

Right, so an Apple TV in 'stand-by (where the red light remains on like on DVD players, TV's etc) can and will allow me to switch lights on/off and control my heating on Apple HomeKit products when I'm at work, at a friends, partying (yeah right!!!!) etc ?

Just for clarifications the light is on when in use and off when its "off". However its never really off as long as its plugged in.

Regardless of whether the LED on the ATV is on or off as long as its set up for a home hub and plugged into the wall it will work for exactly like you described it.
