ATV and library syncing

I have a gen1 ATV. I had to replace my Mac with the iTunes library the ATV was linked to. I copied the library (20gb music) to the new Mac and everything is fine there. I want to add music to the ATV, but it isn't set up to sync. When I set it up it will delete the entire library off the ATV and reupload. That will take forever. Any way around this? I will be replacing my current Mac with the same model, will the ATV require a sync again even if I am using the same hard drive in the new Mac?
