Since the wife got a new phone the other day, we went ahead and took advantage(?) of the free year subscription. Well, after snooping around I can't really say I'm impressed. With the exception of maybe a few things it appears everything you would want to watch is a la cart, ie requires additional payment. So, you pay Apple to use a service in order to pay again to watch something in it. Like I said, maybe it's just me not understanding what this thing is or does...

I’m right there with ya.

You have access to all the ATV+ content that’s currently available, everything else is pretty much recommendations from other applications and what’s available from the store.

By 'Access to all' also appears to mean (in most cases) you can click on it followed by the next screen with a buy button.

That’s not ATV+ content though, I think your getting confused between the ATV App and ATV+.

I'm with Gonzo on this. You've confused the TV app with Apple TV+
The TV app houses plenty of external services along with iTunes for purchase or rental.

If anything, from what I can see, Apple TV+ is defining itself as a rather intelligent and elegant streaming service that is offering a rather smarter type of content. Don't think of it as Netflix which offers everything under one roof, I guess that's not Apple's style for now but it has a direction and that's great - whether there is enough people out there who demand intelligent television and ultimately will pay a subscription for it, I really know, in fact sadly, i'm not convinced that there is (I don't watch TV myself) but time will tell.

Unfortunately there isn't much confusion since those are the list I was referring to as the exceptions. For everything else, atv+ appears to be just a collection point for other entities to peddle their wares. I don't necessarily take issue with this, was just hoping for more available choices than what is currently there. As it is, certainly not worth the money so I've put a reminder in the calendar for next year to decide and potentially cancel the subscription before real charges commence.

You still appear to confuse aTV app (which is an aggregator app that was there as-is before aTV+ even launched) for the aTV+ (streaming service of Apple’s original content, one of many offerings presented inside aTV app).

The stuff in the list is free if you got the free year with device purchase. Did you activate the free year?

I think what may be needed here is a strong emphasis on the ‘+’ suffix…

• The Apple TV app is the aggregator of many TV services, some free, some paid. It also collates content a user has bought such as movies from iTunes

• Apple TV+ is the name of Apple’s own content service - comprising TV programmes, films & documentaries. By many accounts this service is similar to HBO (or to a lesser extent, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video)

it’s the latter - Apple TV+ - that Apple customers get complimentary access to for a year, with purchase of certain new devices.

It’s also worth noting that as a nascent service, new content is being added frequently to Apple TV+, and another few months in, there will likely be much additional content.

Again you’re confusing the two.
ATV the app is just that, a central hub that links all content under one roof which also gives recommendations to other content.
ATV+ is exactly what has been advertised, it’s just a channel within the the ATV app.

Maybe you aren't confused, are you trying to confuse others? The 'exceptions' as you call them, ARE what Apple TV+ is. The Apple TV app is what you are describing, and yes, it lists Apple TV+ shows. But sure, double down on that.

No intent to confuse others, having enough trouble with my own understanding. After spending time with atv+ it's now clear what it is and what it isn't. Bottom line, it's not for me...

ATV+? More like ATV-...

Just kidding. But yeah ATV+ is a collection of only original content from Apple. Netflix and Hulu and even HBO are different in that they are original content plus aggregators/curators of other content. So I guess it really shouldn’t be called “ATV+“, it should be called “ATVonly”.

It’s actually like Disney+ though, which also only hosts their own original content—except that Disney has decades of content created by multiple child-companies, and Apple only has a couple of years’ worth.

Here is amusing summary of the current situation - Apple TV all the way down.

IME, there are two types of streaming Apps. One recommends and shows you only what you can watch from your subscription - Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and CBS All Access fall into this camp.

The second, like Apple and Amazon Prime mix what you can buy with what you can watch with your subscriptions. Amazon has a huge catalog for Prime video, so they can keep the number of 'Rent or Buy' carousels to a minimum. Apple lacks a large subscription catalog.

As an analogy to the Apple TV App, imagine if your iBooks app showed you row after row of books to read. Then, after you click on one you discover you have to buy it first.

if Apple simply included purchased items and channel subscriptions in the TV Library, the app would be much more useful to many.
