ATV3 - white noise through HDMI when playing Dolby 5.1 content

hi all

I have my Apple TV 3 connected via HDMI to my TV, and via optical cable to my surround amp.

When I play Netflix content with Dolby Digital 5.1, it produces a horrible loud 'white noise' through the TV. But the amp correctly produces a 5.1 sound.

I can 'mute' the TV each time, but just wanted to see if there was any other more elegant way to setup the Apple TV?

If I change the Digital OUt setting to "Auto" rather than "on", then the TV sound is fine, but the amp doesn't get 5.1 through optical.
