sorry for the cryptic subject line...hard to put into short form what is going on...
since having had the apple tv, i've had to reboot it almost every day because it locks up most of the time (there have been a few other weird behaviors) when it has been sitting still for a while.
here is the symptom:
-when we come back to use the Apple TV on our Sony 900e television, we find that the Sony and Apple are having weird communication issues. it will flash between a screen of "no input found" and then show the home screen or screen saver image, and then repeat that cycle. the only way to solve the problem is to reboot and try again.
i've tried to play with a number of things including: different cables, different HDMI ports, turning off Bravia Sync (CEC), changing sleep time, and have had no consistent luck at improving our problem.
One interesting artifact that may or may not be related is in general, my Apple TV never goes to sleep on its own, regardless of what it is set to. (15 min, 30min, etc.)
my last thing to try is to force sleep the ATV before shutting down the home theater system to see if that helps, but if i recall, i tried this at some other point and it didn't solve the problem.
i really wish there was an "off switch" on the apple TV so that things would start up more gracefully when we want to use it. the ATV still works fine if we reboot, but that's a hassle for my nontechy wife since i haven't figured out a way to program a reboot sequence into my URC MX-500 remote.
i would love to hear some suggestions on other fixes to note. i should note that our current set up does use a sequence of macros to power down the entire setup (tv, processor/amp, blu ray player (although this should matter), ATV (which doesn't really power down)).
Off macro: returns TV to HDMI4 (Tivo) so that the setup can be used without the home theater if my wife wishes and the tivo remote.
M3 : turns on TV, turns on processor and amp, switches the TV input to the ATV4k.
it's when i hit M3 that i discover this has happened several hours (typically 12-24 hours) after last using the setup.
i can only guess there is some odd interaction with the TV where the ATV is confused about where it is sending its signal? the Sony doesnt' have a problem with any other device and this never happened with our 3rd generation Apple TV.
