Audible app

Is there any way to download books to the watch audible app that doesn’t send you a bit mad.
Currently I can only do it by keeping the iPhone and watch apps displayed.
Otherwise they just hang there, it doesn’t say it’s failed or anything it just doesn’t download.
I love walking the dog without having my phone but this is a real inconvenience for 20 hour books.

When you open an Audible book the first time on your watch, it starts downloading the book immediately if you are in wifi range. You can pause the book and see a complication that indicates download progress. Even a very long book will complete download in a minute or two.
