Audio crackling through headphones - screen or socket?

My son's iPhone 4 has started having audio issues through headphones. At volumes less than about 75%, the music just starts crackling. This goes away temporarily if the headphone jack is moved or the top left of the screen (near the hp socket) is pressed in.
Is this a screen or audio socket issue, guys?

I have the same problem but it only does it with my speaker aux cable. My headphone cable is fine.

Yes, I had to get the headphone jack replaced. Cost about £35.
