I purchased a 3.5mm audio extender for my MacBook to have it closer in case I have to plug in my headphones.

The problem is that when I plug in the extender (without the headphones) the Mac thinks I have my headphones are plugged in.

Is there any way around this? I want to have my speakers as the output when the extender is plugged in, and the headphones when I plug in my headphones in the extender.

Thanks!

Didn't work. The app doesn't let me switch between "Headphones" and "Internal Speakers" when the cable is plugged in.

By plugging in the adapter you're closing the circuit of the headphone jack...nothing you can do about that. The adapter=headphones since it's in the jack as far as your computer is concerned. This is the case for any electronic device I've ever used that has a speaker system with an optional headphone jack output.
