Does anyone know if the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the MacBook Air M1 can be used as audio input i.e. microphone?
Using speakers works. When I plug the mic in it is recognized but it does not seem to work.
I dunno if something like this would help:

I need such a thing anyways for using both speakers and microphone at the same time and the connector looks a bit different than the one on my current headset.

It should work. I use a different brand of the same thing. I think they all come out of the same factory.

Are you sure the mic has a TRRS (3 bands, 4 segments) jack versus TRS (2 bands, 3 segments) jack? Many better mics are TRS.

The mic has just 2 bands and 3 segments so it won't work directly I guess?. Will it work when I plug mic and speaker connection into such a splitter or do I need a totally different headset?

I just tested it for the first time since I got the M1 Air in November. It works for me. I've been using AirPods Pro so I haven't needed a wired mic but it is nice to know that the connection is still there if I need it.

I'm using a normal TRRS 3 band 4 connector cable. Nothing unusual that I can see.

Assuming you are talking about a separate mic you likely need a cable like this one. Amazon.com: 3.5mm Headphone Splitter Adapter, MillSO CTIA Audio Splitter (2 TRS Female to 1 TRRS Male) Compatible for Xbox One, PS4, Smartphone, Laptop to a Double Plugs Gaming Headset Adapter - 30cm/12inch: Electronics

Look at the drawings on the left (specifically the picture from the bottom) and see if that matches your situation.
