audio making strange popping sounds sporadically

i have a powerbook i got in 2003 and ever now and then, seemingly randomly, there is a loud pop sound and my computer stops making music. This happens when I am using itunes, although thats the only thing I use that makes sound on my computer. It normally resumes playing if I pause and unpause the music. Any ideas on what it is? hardware or software? thanks

Software. It's a bug in iTunes 7 and hopefully it'll get fixed soon. It's pretty annoying.
