I got my MBP hooked up to a Samsung HDTV via Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter, and then HDMI to HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV.

The picture is working fine, but the sound is only coming through the MBP speakers, and not the TV speakers.

I went to Sound in System Preferences, and under "Output" it said that Samsung had no output controls or something.

Any ideas on how I can get both audio and video?

PS. the MDP to HDMI adapter I bought from ebay said that audio is supported, so I would hope that is correct, and it is not the adapter...

Are you on Lion? I think something broke in the update. I can no longer get audio, either.

only some macs do that

only the lastest macs allow sound to be transmitted down the HDMI cable, if you search for displayport to hdmi on macs you'll find something about it.

If you have the adaptor that allows sound then that might cause other problems. I have two adaptors, one allows sound and one doesn't. My mac wont transmit sound via the displayport (2009 macbook pro), so I have to use a jack to jack from the headphone socket to the pc in on my samsung tv.

BUT if i use the clever audio capable adaptor the tv thinks its getting sound and disables the audio in. The other more simple displayport to HDMI adaptor allows the pc audio in to work.

Plug the tv in first..then start your movie. If the movie has started even if you're just at the play movie/scene selection screen the sound will not output..worked that way on my '10 and now the '11

I am having the same problem, I'll try the above poster's method and update after work. I played around with the sound options and it does show up in the settings that it should be outputting.
