Bought a pair of desktop speakers to accompany my setup however I would prefer to keep with wiring to a minimum.

Since I am running a Macbook+Thunderbolt display I would love to find the best solution for plugging speakers into the display rather than the macbook.

My speakers accept either 3.5mm or Digital Optical.

Any suggestions on what would be the best way to get audio out of the thunderbolt display without sacrificing audio quality?

Since you are already running the TB and magsafe cable from the display to your MacBook, what is the big deal having one additional cable? All you have to do is velcro or zip tie it to the TB cable.

I think the digital optical from the laptop would be the best option, IMO.

buy a usb or firewire audio interface and plug it into the thunderbolt display

Do you have an Airport Express/Extreme? If it's near your setup, plug the speakers into that and use AirPlay.
