Audio problem when using a data projector

I have a Macbook Pro 15” which normally has no problems. Last night I was to give a very important power point presentation and had a major problem with audio. The PP is mostly text or image slides but I had 4 embedded videos. I was presenting in a auditorium with a sound system. I went early and tested the sound out. For audio I went out via the headphone jack and was connected to a clean box and then an XLR cable. The sound was great. Then 1 hr before the show we plugged in and ran a short test for the video and audio. This time there was a hum and you couldn’t hear the audio from the video. After much testing we discovered that as soon as I connected the data projector using my Apple DVI to VGA Display Adapter the static hum came back.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Steve
