iPhone 13 Pro Audio sharing is spotty

TThe feature where you can share the music on your iPhone with someone else who also have airpods hasn't been reliable. Skipping and drops happen often. Are the newer airpods rock solid reliable or are they also a bit unreliable? I know they have the newer bluetooth but I can't tell if thats the culprit here.
