Backgroung: I was an assistant producer for a film last year (well, Sept 07 - Feb 08), and I worked with the Sound Designer/Supervising Sound Editor, alternating running boom and running the recording device. Now, this year, I'm apparently the head of the Sound Dept. (the other guy has a senior thesis, and a job). My experience with sound mixing aside from the previous movie is mostly live (mixing bands on 8-16 channel analog mixers) and a bit of radio. I'll be inheriting our MOTU Traveler from the previous film (same Executive Producer/Director, same equipment), but I won't be inheriting the sound software (Digital Performer 5), as it's actually technically owned by the old Sound Designer's employer, and the laptop it's on isn't available. I'll likely be using a new Macbook Pro (which I'll be buying within the next 4-6 weeks)
So now we get to my question: which sound recording software should I use with this MOTU Traveler? It's a FW400 interface, and we'll be using at most two or three microphones simultaneously (and frequently only one Boom Mic).
1) I'm looking for software with a lot of DP's functionality that doesn't cost $500. Obviously, I'm not going to get the whole package on the cheap, but since I'm going to be partially funding the production, so I definitely want to try to stay under $300 or so if possible (DP5 lists for $800, can't find it below $500). I don't need it before September, if that's a factor.
2) Nearly all of us are college students, but I'm wary of buying a "Educational version" and discovering that the licensing forbids us from distributing the movie commercially (our studio/production company/distributor is a non-profit hobby organization). Is that a risk?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.
