Just wondering if any of you guys using this headphone? whats the pro and cons? is it better than Grado or any other high-end studio monitoring cans?

Grados are a completely different animal compared to the M50s. M50s are closed studio-type headphones, while grados are open with emphasis on high-mids for rock and melodies.

I've owned the M50s before for a short while before selling them off. I can tell you anything about them and a good number of other headphones they'd compare to, but you'd have to be more specific about what you're looking for in a headphone.

For starters, they have a decently balanced bass response-- a bit on the heavy side, and it extends way low. The mids are slightly recess and the treble is sparkly, but a bit tinny.

Thank you very much for the info, actually that's all I want to know. I like my sound clean and flat. A little bass heavy is fine. I mean for 140 it won't go wrong.

Do a search on GEARSLUTZ.COM for the ATH-M50. Studio people love them, including me. I find them very true and unhyped across the spectrum. If they broke or got lost I'd buy another pair.

Don't let one or two guys' opinions make your mind up for you. Go over to gearslutz and read pages and pages of opinions on them.

Head-fi as well, I frequent it. It's a place where you can find 1000 other audiophile nutjobs at a time who're rather picky and critical of headphones.

For me, they checked a lot of boxes and they will get a lot of use until I decide to spend a lot more money on another pair of closed headphones.

1. They are very travel friendly because they seem to be put together with the thought that you will just chunk them in a bag. The hard shell and the pleather (which doesn't attract lint like the cushies on a pair of Grados) are perfect for travel.

2. Closed with decent sound quality - I prefer K701 headphones, but I can't use the K701s in the same room as someone watching TV because they leak in and out too much noise. Therefore, the M50s get a lot of use. They do not have the huge sound stage of the K701s and I do not believe they are as accurate. However, I do think they sound good with every type of music. The Grado SR60s, to my ears, have a bright signature that can be annoying with some types of music. (I do not own any of the higher end Grados, but from what I have read, the signature is similar up the line)

3. Sound descent plugged directly into an iPod...so do the Sr60s, but like I mentioned, I prefer the sound of the M50s overall.

There are tons of posts about them on Head Fi and many people prefer them to more expensive closed phones. I will probably get some of the higher end Shure closed phones down the road because they are supposed to be similar in sound quality to my K701. However, having the M50s in my collection makes that less necessary, so I am not in a big hurry to shell out the money.

I would agree that with certain music they can be tinny, but overall, I am pleased with them.

Audio Technica ath-m50

I have heard that these are great headphones for their under $200 price point. I heard the response is flat which is good because that means that they will produce good sound in all types of music.

One question that i have is that the part of the headphones that plugs in to the iPhone/iPod/iPad/mp3 players is quite large. It is 3.5 mm but I am worried about it being able to plug into my iPhone because the case I have might not let it plug in all the way. This the adapter part not as big as it looks? I can't find these headphones in stores so I have no way to test this. If anyone can provide a response I will greatly appreciate it.

So all and all these are some of the best over ear headphones under $200.
