Occasionally I'll run across some bit of audio on the web that I would like to record, i.e. to put on my iPod. For those times when I cannot simply save the file, I have found it useful to patch the headphone-out jack directly to the line-in jack, mess around with the levels, and then using QuickTime Pro or Garage Band to create a live audio recording. This can also be helpful if I want to record a Skype/iChat conversation I'm having with somebody.

While this works, it seems rather silly to plug a cable into my computer on both ends. Is there a way I can do this on the software end of things? The ideal solution, it seems, would be in the Sound Preferences... I could choose "Built-in Audio Output" as a device for sound input, instead of choosing Internal Microphone" or "Audio Line-in Port".

To clarify—I have seen various audio hijacking programs which incorporate a new user interface and/or recording software, and this does not interest me. I'm looking for a method of applying this functionality to OS X, either through some secret Terminal hack tip that may have been posted in Macworld, or through a third-party software that I only have to run once. I would much rather use the audio cord and record to QT than have to deal with a new UI.

Anybody who can point me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
