My Late 2015 27" iMac has suddenly started acting up with my external DAC, an SMSL M8. I now get a stuttering noise as well as each channel cutting in and out and the the DAC disappears from the sound tab in system preferences and then nothing. The DAC connects to a USB port. I tried all the ports I also tried a Nuforce UDAC-2 with same results however each DAC works fine in a different computer. I don't have any problems with sound through internal speakers.

Prior to this for a number of weeks I was having a big problem with my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard staying connected which finally mysteriously resolved all by itself. Now this...

I've tried PRAM reset, SMC reset and neither made a difference.
Hardware problem?

ANd in Audio/MIDI setup, the frequency and sample rates are set appropriately?

It is set at 2 ch 16-bit Integer 44.1 kHz. In the past it would work at a variety of settings.

there have been scattered reports of people introducing unpowered hubs in between their dacs and the mac.

see, for instance

I appreciate your input but I've never used a hub before. I did try running from 10.13 that I have backed up on a separate drive and still have the same problem. It makes me wonder if it's hardware problem. Maybe USB? I have no idea and am afraid I'll have to bring it to the Apple Store.

I used to have a similar problem with my MaBook Pro but my Scarlett worked fine attached to my iMac Pro. That is until Mojave when it started the stuttering again. I’m hoping a Mojave update will fix. Hugely irritating.
